The recent flood in 2018 showed that almost all the factors involved in the occurrence of the flood or the intensification of its damages were present, especially in relation to the Gorganrood and Qarahsu rivers.
Qarahsoo is the most significant drainage of surface flows in the southern part of Golestan. However, it is not able to discharge floods to the sea due to its low slope, as well as geometric and hydraulic conditions of the seabed. Therefore, solving the problem of flooded lands in Gorgan has been considered by Golestan regional water company and Economic-political planners.
The principal goals and expectations of conducting studies and executive proposals in Qarasu Basin can be listed as follows:
– Preserving the natural conditions of the river, as well as restoring the environment and its ecosystem
– Organizing the bed and the area of the river
– Flood control and safety
– Control of erosion and sedimentation in the riverbed and lands along the river
– Finding Potential for floodwater exploitation in sealing and natural pits
– Managing the exploitation of surface and groundwater resources
