The Atrak River is one of the northern border rivers of the country located on the border of Iran and Turkmenistan, which is known as a deprived area. There is enough water flowing through the Atrak River. However, the exploitation of this river is associated with many problems due to its condition such as being flooded, shore destruction, route change, etc.

Therefore, the officials of Golestan province have been trying to use the rich water resources of this river to develop the cultivated area, and achieve economic growth through the development of agricultural products. On the other hand, by providing more appropriate and better facilities, they can improve living conditions and prevent the migration of exploiters and residents. Implementation of irrigation and drainage networks is considered as the province’s leading project to increase irrigation efficiency, reduce water losses, and increase the production rate.

In this regard, Golestan Agricultural Jihad Organization, in 2004, took the first steps to implement the irrigation and drainage projects along the Atrak River. This being the case, the first and second stages studies of irrigation and drainage network in Qizler lands were handed over to the Mouj Ab Fan company.

Geographical location

Ghizlar lands are part of the Atrak watershed, located in Gonbad, Golestan province. Their exact coordinate is as follows: X=37° ۴۵′ and Y= 54° ۵۷′, ۵۰ meters above sea level. The lands of the project are limited from the north to the border road, from the south to the Khalednabi heights, from the east to the Damagh and Kal Gharekhanji villages, and from the west to the Kheir Khajeh Olya village.

Project Objectives

At present, the lands located in the project area are arid. However, it is possible to improve the productivity of lands if the plan is implemented. Therefore, the objectives of the project can be stated as follows: supply of agricultural water and development of planting the horticultural/agricultural products.

Flood control and the induced damage

Transferring the water to the storage area and from the storage area to the consumption area

Water storage in non-crop seasons

Construction of irrigation and drainage networks

Protecting borders by providing suitable conditions for residents

Performed Activities:

The studies of Gizler irrigation and drainage network design have been carried out by Mouj Ab Fan Company to achieve the mentioned goals in two stages. In the first stage, 14 volumes of studies have been prepared and presented as follows:

1- Volume 1: Physiographic studies and topographic status of the region

  1. Volume 2: Meteorological Studies

3- Volume 3: Hydrological studies

4- Volume 4: General Geological Studies

5- Volume 5: Soil studies and land improvement

6- Volume 6: Studies of the current agricultural, economic, and social situation

7- Volume 7: Studies on the current status of irrigation

8- Volume 8: Drainage and land improvement studies

9- Volume 9: Land Development Plan Studies

10- Volume 10: Technical studies and executive plans

11- Volume 11: Irrigation and drainage network studies

12- Volume 12: Geotechnical studies and material identification

13- Volume 13: Explanatory Studies

14- Volume 14: Integrated and planning studies

Finally, after completing the studies, a volume report of the design has been prepared and presented. After the approval of the first stage studies, the second stage studies have been done and presented in 8 volumes as follows:

1- Volume 1: Supplementary studies of the first stage; Part One: Meteorology Part II: Hydrology and sediment

2- Volume 2: Design studies of pumping stations and water transmission lines
